In short: the term refers to plastic particles with a diameter of less than 5 mm. It is produced intentionally during the production process of substances such as glitter or sunscreen or during the degradation of used plastics. Microplastic particles are often swallowed by living organisms, thus getting into the food chain. The content of microplastics in the environment can be very diverse, but it is commonly found in both soil and water.
